The Ministry of Public Service (MoPS) held a consultative meeting on Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for Secretarial Cadre in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA’s) on 6th September 2017. The meeting took place in the Ministry’s Boardroom at the Ministry Headquarters in Wandegeya and drew representatives from different MDA’s. The purpose of the meeting was to get input/contributions to the concept paper in preparation of the Secretarial cadre Symposium which is slated to take place in November 2017.
In her remarks, the President of the Association of Secretarial and Administrative Professionals in Uganda (ASAPU), Ms. Norah Kiwumulo noted that the Association was formed with the aim of raising awareness among the Secretarial Cadre and draws membership from all secretarial cadre from all Government and Non-Governmental Organizations. She highlighted some of the challenges that the secretarial cadre are faced with which include among others limited privileges and salary disparities.
Mr. Davis Malowa the Ag. Commissioner for Human Resource Planning and Development at MoPS chaired the meeting and encouraged all officers employed under the secretarial cadre to join ASAPU. He underscored the aspects of CPD, professionalism and performance. He also highlighted the Secretarial Cadre Symposium and encouraged all participants to attend.
The meeting resolved that the planned Symposium should be a three (3) day event that should be held annually. A committee was set up to coordinate the preparations of the symposium.
It was agreed that issues concerning employee wellness, planning for retirement and work ethics and integrity in the Public Service be included among the issues to be discussed at the symposium.
